Tips For Choosing The Right HVAC Size For Your Home Comfort

Picking The Perfect HVAC Unit

If you want to stay cool during the hot summer months, and warm and safe during the cold, frigid winter months, then you need an HVAC system. This is the complicated network of ducts, furnaces, vents that keep your home comfortable. Having the right size HVAC is important and the following tips will help you choose.

Discover Your Home’s Size

When installing the right size HVAC system for your residence, you need to know which one will be best for your home. Because when it comes to HVAC, one size does not fit all. If the HVAC system is too small, you’ll be left frozen in the winter and sweltering in the summer. And if the system is too large, you’ll be wasting tons of money.

The key is to know the BTUs needed to heat your home’s size, and there are two different methods you can use:

  • The Manual J Calculation is the most accurate method of measurement. It combines the square footage of your house with other aspects, such as the amount of installation in your residence, the age and types of windows, how many people live in your home, the climate you inhabit, even the number and types of heat-generating appliances. Combining all of those things will give you your Manual J Calculation. Local companies often offer a free energy audit, which will provide your calculation, so contact an HVAC technician if you’re looking for your Manual J Calculation
  • The other method is based on knowing the square footage of your home. This isn’t nearly as accurate but it can be a quick, easy way to get a general understanding of the BTUs needed for your HVAC system. There are easy to follow charts online, so once you know your home’s square footage, check a chart for the number of BTUs.

Understanding BTUs

BTU is a term that is used pretty heavily when discussing HVAC systems. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to understand. BTU stands for “British Thermal Unit” and it’s a standardized calculation that measures the amount of heat needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

If you’re looking for a more powerful HVAC system, then look for more BTUs. Higher BTUs mean a larger room can be heated more quickly.

Consult a Professional

HVAC knowledge is a skill that takes years to master and perfect, which is why HVAC technicians are so highly trained.

HVAC systems are complicated networks including furnaces and air conditioners, vents and ducts, and HVAC work can be difficult and dangerous.

If you have questions or concerns about your HVAC system, contact your local HVAC technician. It’s their job to help you make sure your home is safe and comfortable to inhabit.
